The Apostle Peter was inspired by the Spirit of God to instruct those who have trusted Christ to “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18) This is not a mere suggestion or a good idea; it is clearly commanded to all who believe. He gives this command on the heels of discussing the last days, the second coming of Christ, the temporal nature of this earthly existence and the ultimate objective of God for every believer to be holy and live godly.
The very phrase “grow in grace” contains a powerful implication – that is the involvement of God in the process. God not only initiates this growth, He also empowers us so that we can grow. Growth in grace is not limited to children or new believers; it is the intention of God for Christians of all ages and levels of maturity. All of us have some place to grow in the Christian life.
But let us be sure that we recognize the multi-faceted nature of our growth. As indicated in the illustration below – our growth is not simply a matter of what we know, but rather what we are and what we are doing with what we know. It becomes rather obvious that all of us have plenty of room for growth. So, I pose this question: Where are you growing?
