God does many things in the course of a person's life to keep them from their own destructive ways. He uses parents, pastors, teachers, friends, civil authorities, circumstances and the like to serve as restraining measures. But there are times when people are bent on having their own way and refuse to be persuaded otherwise. In cases like these, God takes away the restraints, allowing folks to go their own way, in hopes that they will learn their lesson and return to Him and His ways of truth. Some do learn, but many do not. We desperately need divine restraints in our lives. In some cases, God will use us to be one of those restraints in someone else's life.

We live in a disrespectful world. Our "me-first" culture has conditioned us to get what we want, to get ahead, any way we can with little consideration for the other guy. This shows up in the home, in the workplace, on the highway, in the grocery store and even in the church. It might be the way of the world, but it certainly is not the way of Christ, nor should it be the way of the Christian. Our text gives us four solid attitudes that form a solid foundation for respectfulness. We are not respectful simply because we do respectful things from time to time. It all begin with the attitudes of our hearts; attitudes that are already resident in the heart of the believer who is in Christ.
